Allegan District Library’s goal is to remain a vital asset to the community by providing quality library services that help educate and enrich the lives of the people of the library district. In order to do this we must ensure that our building is equipped to meet the changing needs of our community today and into the future.
In planning for our future we worked with Library Building Consultant, George Lawson, to evaluate our facility and create a Building Needs Assessment. The purpose of this assessment was to identify the limitations of the existing facility as well as document new services, collections, and programs an improved facility would provide.
The needs assessment process included extensive staff, board and community input and expert data analysis. Our facility, resources and service areas were evaluated relative to other Michigan libraries and communities of comparable size, using data published yearly by the State of Michigan. In this way we gained a clearer perspective on what we should be offering a community our size.
To assist us with future planning, the assessment provided an estimate of the space required to support the library’s collections and services through the next 40 years. The results of the assessment indicate that the library is currently in a space deficit with inadequate accessibility, space for children and teen programs, public seating, technology applications, collections and work room spaces.
The community input we received has been an invaluable asset in creating this document. Your hopes and dreams for the Allegan District Library are reflected in its pages, along with staff and board observations and goals for the future. Meeting the informational needs of our community is our highest priority. Please take the opportunity to read through our Needs Assessment, and join the conversation!
Members of the Allegan District Library Board will be available at our National Library Week event on Saturday, April 11th from 2-4 PM to discuss the Needs Assessment and answer any questions that you may have.
