![]() Get caught reading Did you know that reading to a child stimulates his or her brain to grow? May is Get Caught Reading Month, a celebration of the ongoing literacy campaign sponsored by the Association of American Publishers. Troubling literacy statistics have shown that more than 20 percent of adults in the U.S. cannot read above a fifth grade level. To improve this situation, schools, libraries and publishers have banded together to share the news about the joys of a good book and encourage young and old to get caught reading. Consider devoting at least 30 minutes every day to read for pleasure or to read to your children. To order promotional posters of celebrities who got caught reading, learn more about illiteracy in the U.S. or find creative ideas to encourage reading, visit www.getcaughtreading.org. |
Let the Wild Rumpus Begin! June 10 marks the 80th birthday of author-illustrator Maurice Sendak, sometimes described as the Picasso of childrens literature. The youngest son of Polish immigrants, Sendak was born in Brooklyn and first achieved recognition as an artist for his black-and-white illustrations in Ruth Krausss A Hole Is to Dig (1952). He is best known for Where the Wild Things Are, a wildly original look at a frustrated little boy that won the Caldedott Medal in 1964 and is now being adapted into a film by Spike Jonze. Sendaks books make great read-alouds, and the creative energy revealed in his art will delight children and adults alike. |
